Launched on 1 November 2026, EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service lets more than 8 crore EPF subscribers check their PF balance, view their last 5 transactions and get passbook details with a single “Hi” message. Here is what the service is for, what you need before starting, and the exact steps to use it safely.
In short
- EPFO launched its verified WhatsApp service on 1 November 2026 (its 74th Foundation Day). The official number is +91 8796441800 — save it and send “Hi”.
- You can check your PF balance, see your last 5 transactions, access passbook details, and get personalised help for PMVBRY (Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana) requirements.
- You must message from the same mobile number registered with your UAN. The system verifies your number before showing any data.
- EPFO never asks for your UAN password, OTP, Aadhaar or bank details on WhatsApp. Never share them — with anyone.
What is the EPFO WhatsApp service?
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) launched this service on 1 November 2026 at its 74th Foundation Day event in New Delhi, where Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced it along with the automatic settlement of small inoperative accounts. The idea is simple: routine PF work that earlier needed a portal login, an app, or a visit to a PF office can now start inside WhatsApp — an app most subscribers already use every day.
It works like a guided chat. You send a message to EPFO’s verified WhatsApp number, the system checks that your WhatsApp number matches the mobile number registered against your UAN (Universal Account Number), and then shows you a menu of services in your preferred language. Because the service is tied to your registered number, nobody else can pull up your PF details from a different phone.
What is the EPFO WhatsApp service used for?
As announced at launch, subscribers can use the service to:
- Check the PF balance — the current balance in your EPF account, without logging into the member portal.
- View the last 5 transactions — the most recent credits and debits, so you can confirm your employer is depositing your PF every month.
- Access passbook information — view or download your EPF passbook details from the chat itself.
- Get claim-related assistance — guidance and status help for claims you have filed with EPFO.
- Complete PMVBRY requirements — personalised guidance for finishing pending steps under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, such as Aadhaar authentication and documentation.
- Receive service information and updates — details of EPFO services and new announcements in a language you choose.
For a full multi-year passbook in PDF or older records, the EPFO member passbook portal is still the better tool — the WhatsApp service is built for quick, everyday checks.
Before you start: what you need
- An active UAN, activated on the EPFO member portal.
- Your EPFO-registered mobile number on WhatsApp. This is the most important condition. The chat must start from the same number that is seeded with your UAN; if you message from a different number, the service cannot verify you and will not show your PF data.
- The correct official number: +91 8796441800, with the WhatsApp green verified tick next to the EPFO name. Many fake “EPFO” numbers circulate online — do not use any other number.
Changed your mobile number recently? First update it on the EPFO Unified Member Portal (Manage > Contact Details), and only then use the WhatsApp service.
How to use the EPFO WhatsApp service: step by step
- Save the number. Add +91 8796441800 to your contacts as “EPFO”. Check that the profile shows EPFO’s name with the green verified tick.
- Open a chat and send “Hi”. (EPFO’s announcement also describes starting by scanning the QR code it published on its official social media posts — both routes open the same chat.)
- Select your language. The service replies and asks for your preferred language — English, Hindi and other Indian languages are offered. Reply with your choice.
- Let the number verification happen. The system checks that your WhatsApp number matches the mobile number registered with your UAN. If the numbers match, the service menu opens. If they do not match, you will be guided to update your registered mobile number first.
- Pick a service from the menu. Reply with the number of the option you want — PF balance, last 5 transactions, passbook, or PMVBRY help.
- Read the result in the chat. Your balance, recent transactions or passbook details appear in the conversation itself. For the passbook, follow the prompt to view or download it.
| If you choose… | You get… |
|---|---|
| PF Balance | Your current EPF account balance |
| Last 5 Transactions | Your five most recent PF credits/debits — the quickest way to confirm monthly employer deposits |
| Passbook | Your EPF passbook information, viewable/downloadable from the chat |
| PMVBRY Help | Step-by-step guidance to complete pending PMVBRY requirements |
Do not confuse this with EPFO’s other WhatsApp options
EPFO now has three different things on WhatsApp, and they do different jobs:
- The new verified service (+91 8796441800) — the interactive service described above. This is the only one that shows your personal PF data.
- The EPFO WhatsApp Channel (launched earlier in 2026, over 1.11 lakh followers by September 2026) — a one-way broadcast channel for announcements, scheme updates, videos and how-to guides (UAN activation, digital life certificate, scheme information). You cannot check your balance or any personal details there.
- Regional office WhatsApp helplines (running since 2020, covering all regional offices) — for grievances and office-specific queries. Your regional office’s number is listed on epfindia.gov.in under “Contact Us”. These are staff-assisted helplines, not the automated personal-data service.
Safety rules: read this before you chat
- Use only +91 8796441800 and confirm the green verified tick. EPFO has warned members about unofficial numbers and suspicious links.
- EPFO never asks for your UAN password, OTP, Aadhaar details or bank credentials on WhatsApp. If any chat asks for these, it is a fraud attempt — stop and report it.
- Do not forward your PF screenshots or personal details to unknown numbers or groups.
- If a message claims to be from EPFO but comes from an ordinary 10-digit personal-looking number without the verified tick, treat it as fake.
Facing problems? Common issues and what to do
The service drew very heavy traffic on launch day, and several subscribers reported slow replies, error messages after choosing a menu option, and OTP-related problems in the first days. EPFO had not issued a detailed clarification at the time of the initial reports. If the chat does not respond or returns an error:
- Wait and retry later — launch-week congestion is the most common cause.
- Check your registered number — if you recently changed SIMs or numbers, update the number on the member portal first; a mismatch is the most common reason for verification failure.
- Use an alternative channel meanwhile: the UMANG app; missed call to 9966044425 from your registered number for balance; SMS “EPFOHO UAN” to 7738299899; the EPFO member portal; or the toll-free helpline 1800 118 005. Our earlier guide covers all of these: EPFO: How to Use UMANG App, SMS, WhatsApp and Missed Call Options.
- For a grievance, use the EPFiGMS portal or your regional office’s WhatsApp helpline (numbers on epfindia.gov.in > Contact Us).
Also launched the same day: automatic settlement of small inoperative accounts
Alongside the WhatsApp service, EPFO announced that subscribers with Aadhaar-verified inoperative EPF accounts holding up to ₹1,000 will no longer need to file individual claims — EPFO will settle these accounts on its own after identity and bank-account verification. The move covers about one lakh inoperative accounts worth roughly ₹5 crore. EPFO also reported that its upgraded IT system brought the average claim settlement time down to 2.57 days in October 2026.
FAQs
What is the official EPFO WhatsApp number?
+91 8796441800. Save it, confirm the green verified tick next to the EPFO name, and send “Hi” to start. EPFO also published a QR code on its official social media posts that opens the same chat.
Can I check my PF balance on WhatsApp without a UAN?
No. The service works through your UAN and the mobile number registered with it. If your UAN is not activated, activate it on the EPFO member portal first.
Why is the WhatsApp service not showing my PF details?
The most common reason is a number mismatch: you are messaging from a WhatsApp number that is different from the mobile number registered with your UAN. Update your contact details on the member portal, then try again. Launch-period congestion can also delay or fail responses — retry after some time.
Is the EPFO WhatsApp service free?
Yes. It works over your normal WhatsApp and internet connection; EPFO does not charge for balance, transaction or passbook enquiries.
What is the difference between the EPFO WhatsApp service and the EPFO WhatsApp channel?
The service (the verified number) is interactive and personal — it shows your own balance, transactions and passbook after verifying your registered number. The channel is a one-way broadcast for announcements and guides; it shows no personal data.
Can pensioners use this service?
The launch services are built around EPF member accounts (balance, transactions, passbook, PMVBRY help). Pension-related queries are still best handled through the regional office helplines, the toll-free number 1800 118 005, or the EPFiGMS grievance portal.
