The Department Is Now Texting Your CA

The Income Tax Department has added a new name to its reminder list — not taxpayers this time, but the chartered accountants and tax professionals who file their audit reports. Under the SAKSHAM NUDGE campaign, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has sent SMS and email reminders to about 12,000 tax professionals, urging them to file pending tax audit reports for Assessment Year 2026-27 before the 21 October 2026 deadline.

If your books need a tax audit, this development matters to you directly: a slow auditor can now become your penalty problem.

What Is the SAKSHAM NUDGE Campaign?

SAKSHAM stands for Non-Intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable. It is the Income Tax Department’s data-driven compliance initiative: instead of jumping straight to enforcement, the department uses the filing data it already has to spot gaps — and then sends targeted reminders so taxpayers (and now professionals) can correct things voluntarily.

The department first used SAKSHAM NUDGE to nudge taxpayers to meet obligations and correct reporting errors. This week, the CBDT has expanded the campaign’s ambit to tax professionals, acknowledging that CAs play a “very crucial” role in overall compliance.

Who Received the Reminders — and Why?

According to officials cited by PTI and business dailies on 13-14 October 2026, the outreach targeted a very specific group:

  • About 12,000 tax professionals — CAs and other practitioners — received SMSes and emails.
  • The filter was data-based: professionals who have filed fewer than 50% of the tax audit reports (Form 3CD) for AY 2026-27 compared to the number they filed in the previous financial year.
  • The department noticed that a “significant” number of audit reports were still pending, even after the deadline was extended from 30 September to 21 October.

The scale of the pending pile-up is visible in the department’s own numbers: over 19.5 lakh tax audit reports have already been filed for AY 2026-27 — but the rest must land within the next week.

The Deadlines You Must Not Confuse

What Original due date Extended due date
Tax audit report (Forms 3CA/3CB with 3CD) 30 Sep 2026 21 Oct 2026
ITR filing for audit cases 31 Oct 2026 21 Nov 2026
Transfer pricing cases — Form 3CEB 31 Oct 2026 (no extension)
Transfer pricing cases — ITR 30 Nov 2026 (no extension)

The extensions came via CBDT Circular No. 07/2026 dated 28 September 2026. Note carefully: transfer pricing cases get no benefit of the extension. For more detail on the revised timeline, see our Tax Audit Deadline Extended to 21 October 2026 checklist.

Taxpayer Checklist: Protect Yourself Before 21 October

The department is reminding your auditor — but the legal liability is yours. Run through this checklist now:

  1. Confirm your auditor has everything. Call or message your CA today and confirm all books, invoices and supporting documents are in hand. Do not assume.
  2. Reconcile 26AS, AIS and TIS. Make sure the figures in your books match Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement and the Taxpayer Information Summary. Mismatches here are exactly what trigger scrutiny later.
  3. Ask for the upload acknowledgement. Once the audit report (Form 3CA/3CB + 3CD) is uploaded on the e-filing portal, ask your auditor to share the acknowledgement number. The report must be uploaded before you can file your ITR.
  4. Don’t wait for the last day. The e-filing portal historically slows under last-minute load. With 12,000 professionals rushing to catch up this week, earlier is safer.
  5. Know the penalty for late audit. Missing the 21 October date can attract a penalty under Section 271B — 0.5% of total sales/turnover/gross receipts, capped at &rupee;1,50,000.

Why This Matters Beyond the Deadline

The SAKSHAM NUDGE expansion is a signal about how compliance will work going forward: the department will increasingly use its own data to find laggards before they find trouble. Earlier this week it was restaurants caught by TDS-ITR matching; today it is CAs lagging on audit reports. Taxpayers who keep their filings complete and on time simply won’t appear on these lists.

FAQs

What is SAKSHAM NUDGE?

It is the Income Tax Department’s data-driven compliance campaign — Non-Intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable. The department identifies potential compliance gaps from filing data and sends targeted SMS/email reminders so taxpayers and professionals can act voluntarily, rather than facing enforcement first.

Did the tax audit deadline get extended again?

No. The tax audit report deadline for AY 2026-27 stands at 21 October 2026 (extended from 30 September via CBDT Circular 07/2026). The SAKSHAM NUDGE reminders are about the existing extended deadline, not a new extension.

Who received the SAKSHAM NUDGE reminders?

About 12,000 tax professionals who had filed fewer than 50% of their AY 2026-27 tax audit reports (Form 3CD) compared with the previous financial year. Over 19.5 lakh audit reports have already been filed.

What is the ITR deadline for audit cases this year?

21 November 2026 — extended from 31 October 2026. Transfer pricing cases are excluded: their deadlines remain 31 October (Form 3CEB) and 30 November 2026 (ITR).

What if my CA misses the 21 October deadline?

You could face a penalty under Section 271B of up to &rupee;1,50,000, and your ITR filing gets delayed too. Contact your auditor immediately and get the audit report’s upload acknowledgement number in writing.
